Counseling to ADD

Dear Mark,

I need direction in how I might parent more then just a strong willed child. My son is adopted he has ADHD and has attachment disorder. We have been through therapy for many years even went to the attachment Center for treatment. He is extremely oppositional, will not do his school work,  He likes to make everything an argument. Could you guide me to any books that could give some Guidance as to how to parent a child this difficult? Thank You.

Dear Parent:
First you need to be certain that you want to follow advice from someone who would be totally opposite from what you are used to.
Here are some concerns:

  • I do not believe that ADD or ADHD really exists.  You should read the book “The Myth of ADD.”
  • I do not believe there is any such thing as oppositional behavior disorder or attachment disorder, UNLESS IT IS RELATED TO FETAL ALCHOHOL OR DRUGS.
  • There is much that I don't know about your family life.  How is your marriage?  Are you or your husband controlling?  Is there anger in the family?  Addictions?  Obsessive compulsive behaviors?  Perfectionism?
  • Yes, you can start reading several books that will help you.  They are: The Education of a Child by the Wisdom of Fenelon  (this book is about a boy who was the most oppositional child on earth! And became a prince!); Heartfelt Discipline; How old is your son?
  • I need you to read through many of the counseling sessions on our web under parenting.  These will help you to start thinking on a different level about his behavior.
  • If his behavior is related to some kind of brain dysfunction or disorder, then this approach would be helpful but not to exclude medical advise and treatment.

Let's talk again, please answer the questions and start reading,  much to do…
