A Peep Behind the Scenes
by O.F. Walton
Behind many smiling faces there hides a hurting heart, and for what may appear to be glamorous, there is usually a high price to pay. Mrs. Walton gives us a glimpse into the life of a disillusioned young actress. In her fabricated world of glamour and glitz, Rosalie finds solace in the words of a gentle old man who gives her a picture of a Shepherd who loves and cares for her. Her travels take on new meaning as she shares with the “down-and-outters” about this wonderful Shepherd who loves them too. This profound century-old story is still relevant in today’s entertainment-enmeshed culture. Often, hidden behind smiling faces are hurting hearts, and that which is attractive and alluring may be a facade, concealing the hard reality of life behind the scenes. This dramatic book is both powerful and sensitive, and sold over two and a half million copies in the 19th Century! It continues to be a favorite among our collectors. |

Testimony #1
The follow testimony about A Peep Behind the Scenes was written by a fifteen-year-old-young man whom I met while speaking at a conference. As I walked into the chapel early one morning, I noticed this young man reading the first page of A Peep Behind the Scenes. I informed him that this would not an appropriate book for him and that Titus: Comrade of the Cross would be better suited for him. He thanked me, but then told me that A Peep Behind the Scenes had captured his attention from the very first word. Nine hours later I returned, and to my surprise, I found him still reading A Peep Behind the Scenes.
Later that night around a campfire, this young man began sharing that earlier that day he read a story about someone who was lost—someone who wasn’t aware that the world’s glitter and glare often mask the hurting hearts behind the scenes. That night he looked up at the crowd and said, “This was me, but the Good Shepherd goeth after that which is lost until he finds it.” It is a night I will not easily forget. I’m sure glad he didn’t stop reading a book that I thought was just for girls! It is my privilege to introduce to you, Ira.
Dear Mr. Hamby: A Peep Behind the Scenes affected my life. It taught me about faith. I love how the story is about a little child getting a picture of a shepherd with a little lamb in his arms and she and her mother start a whole soul searching journey. The little girl right off realizes she was lost and asked the Good Shepherd to find her and her mommy. But the mommy, just like I have thought so many times in my life, felt and believed that she was too far off the right path that the Good Shepherd couldn't find her and must have given up. Still they go on this journey, and her mother starts realizing that maybe the Shepherd is still looking for her, and she remembers this Bible verse that she learned when she was little, “He goeth after that which is lost until he finds it.” I related with the mother in this book so much. All that I can say is that it is a soul book. One that truly takes you on a journey through who you are, where you are with your walk, and gives you inspiration and faith. To follow the losses of the little girl and pains and hurts that she goes through when after her mom dies just inspires me to have faith no matter what happens. This is just a beautiful book.
I pray God's blessings upon Lamplighter Publishing. Because I truly believe that I was wandering down the wrong path. I let God find me that day and realized that the safest place to be was with my Shepherd for he knows what is best for me. It is true. HE GOETH AFTER THAT WHICH IS LOST UNTIL HE FINDS IT. Never give up because God will find you if you want him to, and if you would only let him.
Thank you, Mark, and above all thanks to God for leading me to the chapel that day when I picked up a simple book that captured the very essence of my being and that would make me realize things that I never knew about myself.
I agree with you so much Mark that yeah, it was a GOD thing. You said that out of at least eighty books that you brought that weekend I would pick this one. No, God picked that book to be there and to catch my eye and interest me. Thank you.
God bless and be with you,
Ira
Testimony #2
Good morning, Mark
God is indeed doing mighty things for Lamplighter and for your ministry opportunities. Earlier in the month, I placed an order for a couple of books and ordered the radio drama, “Sir Malcolm and the Missing Prince.” I wanted to know how my kids would respond to it. I had read the book and at the time it was my favorite, as all Lamplighter books are at the moment I read them. Well, we listened to the drama in our Suburban as we were traveling one evening. It was not finished when we returned home, so later my boys asked if they could finish it. The next day my oldest son (15) asked when we were going to order another radio drama. Needless to say, my teenage boys enjoyed it immensely. Actually, my oldest son, who has never actually enjoyed reading, is now reading Sir Malcolm and the Missing Prince. I believe that makes the second Lamplighter book in a row that he has read. He judges a book by its thickness, but I trust that soon he will judge it by its content.
Your email mentioned that churches and pastors could receive the radio drama of “A Peep Behind the Scenes” for free for discipleship and evangelism. I would be interested in how I could download this link.
We continue to appreciate the ministry of Lamplighter and will continue to pray for the work God has for you.
Blessings,
Pastor Jeff

Mark Hamby and others at Lamplighter Publishing,
Congratulations! You have built my character one story at a time! I have twenty-five of your Rare Collector books and have read eight of them, I have enjoyed them all so far! My most favorite though has been “A Peep Behind The Scenes,” this book has brought laughter and tears like no other book I've read! I strongly recommend it to anyone and everyone who enjoys a good story. I’ll keep this book on the top of my list and on my bookshelf for a long time to come. I have been to many book websites and not many are as neat and convenient as yours, keep up the good work! Thy word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. Psalm 119:105
Thanks,

Dear Mr. Hamby,
I would like to try and give you a picture of just how important you and your ministry of wholesome, Godly books, has been to our family. We normally go to home school conventions with money set aside for the Lamplighter table, and over the years we have built up a wonderful collection. But lately I have heard from my wife and oldest daughter (We have four children, 13, 8, 6, and 3) saying that it would be so nice to once again add to our Lamplighter books. And so I ordered a bunch. Oh, the anticipation of their arrival was delicious! And when they came, we all stood around the Kitchen Island, passing them around, flipping through the pages, and smelling the leather bound beauties – quite fun! (Can you tell yet that we don’t have television?
The adventures began with the Dramatization of Charlie’s Choice. We only listen in the car, and that only when we’re driving a good distance, but we couldn’t wait for the first one so we made a one time exception, and listened as we drove short distances. Pretty soon I was saying things like, “I think we aught to drive in to town and run an errand, might as well bring the whole family and hey, we could hear some more of Charlie’s Choice.” Little feet running to the truck – the fastest loading of our vehicle on record. We all cried, we all laughed, we all had the most wonderful time. We loved it, loved it, loved it! My oldest child said it was her favorite ever and that she wants the whole world to hear it! The other three dramatizations are calling us to the truck for another family drive, but I’m saving those for the longer hauls. Though I am terribly tempted; it’s just that we can barely wait to hear them.
Now for our family hearth reads. The fire crackles, the little ones play at our feet or cuddle in our arms, and my wife reads us a book. These are some of our favorite, most blessed times as a family. Right now, she is reading to us from Prisoners of the Sea, and oh it is good. The hour long process of bed time, which puts and end to my wife’s reading, normally starts around 7:00, but one night this week, as the kids pleaded, “one more chapter please.” Again and again I acquiesced, for I too was desperately consumed by the tale. Until finally, my poor wife said, “My throat will not allow me to read another chapter.” So, I went into the kitchen to see what time it was – 9:40. I was shocked! But on a normal night, after the little ones are in bed, my wife and I, and my oldest, might read in our own books. Well Tuesday, as we were doing just that, I looked up from my gem, The Lamplighter, and saw one of my children reading Glaucia the Greek Slave, and another was reading The Wanderer. I looked over at our shelf of beautifully covered Lamplighter books, and I thought of you Mark Hamby, of your wife and children, of your staff that we’ve seen over the years at conventions, and I was struck with the magnitude of the blessing that God has allowed you to be to our little family, even though we’ve never met you personally. I am so thankful for these God-honoring books that are building character and faith into my children. Thank you so much!
In Jesus,
Matt

Guess what?? I'm reading Peep Behind the Scenes. Love it. I read Highland Chairman and Probable Sons a few weeks ago. I believe I've read 90% of all of your books! When life is hard, which it is emotionally quite often for all of us, I reach for a Lamplighter book to bring scriptural truths to light in a unique way. I've said this so many times, Mark, but I have been changed and encouraged and deepened in my walk with the Lord thru Lamplighter books. Thanks. I am so grateful. Thanks for being transparent, authentic and lots of fun!
Cathy
