Matthew 6:22
This morning I came across a portion of Scripture that I had not previously pondered. In Matthew 6 Jesus says: "The eye is the lamp of the body." I had never thought that what I see on a daily basis is the filter system of what enters my body. My body, mind, and soul have a gateway—my eyes. Just think of all the things that we view on a daily basis: the bill boards, the immodesty, the saturation of pop ups, the magazines and the list almost never ends. Jesus continues saying, "If your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness." We live in an image saturated, lust craving culture. Jesus didn't mince words when dealing with wandering eyes—"If you right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away." I know this seems a bit drastic but his point is that lust need to be dealt with aggressively and decisively! I know of a wife who found on her husband's computer, a list of porn sites. That evening before he reached the front door of his home, he found his computer, television, and all the wiring from the cable service crumpled in piles with broken glass and electronic gadgetry strewn across the walkway. I think this was the point that Jesus was trying to make—aggressive and decisive! Our eyes are the lamp of our body, mind, and soul. We are in a battle and we are losing. In any battle, aggressive and decisive actions will be needed to defeat the enemy. And How shall a young man keep his way pure? by guarding it according to your Word!" Psalm 119.
